The Bouches-du-Rhône is to the east of the Var and offers a great variety of landscapes with mountains, plains and wild areas such as the Camargue, big cities such as Marseille, and a coast that offers contrasts with its creeks, beaches and ports.
This department has several faces and inspires many an artist.
Painters such as Cézanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin have immortalised it. These painters have found extraordinary inspiration and lighting here.
It was here that the renowned writer Marcel Pagnol created his lovely characters for his memorable tales. Maurice Béjart-known for his production Boléro by Ravel-was also born here.
The Bouches-du-Rhône is also about old Provençal traditions such as the Ferias d'Arles, the pilgrimage to Saintes Maries de la Mer, and Marseille folklore, whose singsong accent was made popular by the singer and actor Fernandel.
